Holidays To Tenerife: Climb The Highest Peak In The The Atlantic
Are you looking forward to spend your holidays to Tenerife? Are you looking for adventure? Do you want to feel that great adrenalin rush? If yes, then you may want to get your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and pull out your trekking pole to climb Mount Teide.
Mount Teide is actually an active volcano located on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. At 3,718 meters, it is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of Atlantic. Climbing the mountain would be a great personal accomplishment considering that it is the third highest volcano in the globe when measured from its base on the ocean floor. Mount Teide is part of the Teide National Park, an 18,900-hectare protected area that was officially labeled as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 29, 2007. Its spectacular natural beauty makes it one of the most visited national parks in the globe.
The nutrient- and mineral-rich soil around the park makes the area extremely fertile, supporting a large number of plant species. In fact, there are 168 vascular plant species in the park, in which 33 are endemic to Tenerife.
There are forests of Canary Island Pine blanketing the slopes of the volcano. The weather at higher altitudes provide great conditions for fragile trees such as the Canary Island cedar to grow. Flowering plants such as white broom, wallflower, daisy, and violet, all of which have adapted to the extreme conditions on the volcano, are the dominant species.
Additionally, the park has a huge array of invertebrate fauna, more than 40 percent of which are endemic species. If you trek slow and observe your surroundings, you may find strange and unique spiders, beetles, hemipterans, dipterans, and hymenopterae. Birds such as the blue chaffinch, Bethelot's pipit, wild canary, and kestrel rule the skies around Mt. Teide.
You may find the rare endemic reptiles such as the Canary Island lizard, gecko, and skink. There are also mammals that make the mountain park their home such as bats, mouflon, rabbit, house mouse, black rat, feral cat, and Algerian Hedgehog.
